A patio is the cheapest square footage you can add to a Central Texas house, and October-through-April is when Waco actually lives outside. Options that make sense here:

Broom finish — the workhorse: grippy underfoot (matters around pools and after rain), honest price, ages gracefully.
Stamped & stained — stone and slate looks at a fraction of masonry cost; plan on periodic resealing to keep color, and skip the glossy sealers that turn slick.
Pads for structures — pergolas, outdoor kitchens, hot tubs: each has load and anchor requirements the slab should be designed for before the pour, not discovered after.

Shop Slabs, Shed Pads & Garage Floors

McLennan County loves a shop building, and the slab is the foundation in every sense. What we spec by use:

Storage shed pad: standard thickness, clean edges, sloped to shed water.
Vehicle/shop slab: thicker section (and thicker still at edges and lift points), steel on chairs, joints planned around where equipment will sit.
Metal building slabs: anchor-bolt layout and thickened perimeter matched to the building manufacturer's drawings — the coordination step that saves a weekend of grinding later.

All of it sits on the same Blackland clay, so the same rules apply: compacted, moisture-conditioned subgrade and drainage planned before the pour.

How a Pour Actually Goes (So You Can Plan)

Day 0 — layout & prep: forms, excavation, subgrade compaction, steel set on chairs. This is most of the labor and all of the longevity.
Pour day: a few concentrated hours — truck access matters, so we'll talk about gates, sprinklers, and where the chute can reach during the quote.
Joints: control joints cut within the proper window after finishing.
Cure: foot traffic in 1–2 days, cars around a week, heavy loads closer to a month. Texas heat speeds set time but stresses cure — summer pours get early starts and curing care; freeze windows get rescheduled rather than gambled.
